Malayalam cinema in for another poster debate?

In Malayalam, it is raining movies with ‘A’ certificate. They are a misfit for the tailor-made adult movie genre but are outright, system-breaking, questioning and whatnot. Lilli is the latest to have been censored with a clean ‘A’ certificate for its inclusion of explicit violence in a motion picture. The storm is yet to subside, and the makers come again with an earth-shattering poster, all likely to be in the eye of the storm.

The poster doing the rounds has a woman. She is standing, wearing a crown of thorn on her head, holding a bunch of white flowers on her hand. Akin to a halo, tied behind her head is a rough, circular metal-like piece. She is surrounded by predatory men, their faces resembling as if they walked straight out of mythology. Emotions of lust, fear and helplessness flicker from different corners. Would she be interpreted as another version of a much revered figure? If not, who is she? Does she have a name? Who does she represent? Where does she come from?

Prasobh Vijayan, the director who shared the ‘joy’ of receiving ‘A’ certificate for his debut movie with a poster set against the image of a pregnant woman, is as nonchalant as he is from the beginning.

“This is my movie and it is up to you to decide who and what she is. If she is something viewers are familiar to, let it be so. I may call the crown the issues she faces, people are surrounding her to torn her apart. My character and her agony are represented in it. There may not be an exact situation as this in the movie when you watch it,” he explains.

Two more posters are on the way, the director leaves enough hints to expect what.

What is his take on the debut movie straightaway bagging an ‘A’? “It came as expected. The extremities of violence are shown without any cut. The censor certification was a morning to afternoon affair on a day. There is one mute. The entire production team was overwhelmed by the outcome. We did not ask for U or U/A. I am happy about it,” Prasobh states.

The movie is bankrolled by E4 Experiments, a wing of E4 Entertainment, producers of Godha and Ezra. Sexy Durga fame Kannan Nayar, who also acted in Aabhaasam, is the male lead in this tip-to-toe debutant outing. Samyuktha Menon plays the lady lead.

The wait is on till September 7 to see what more is in store.
